The Faculty of Social Sciences is a community of about 3,000 students and 450 employees, and its profile is firmly placed at the centre of Tampere University’s areas of strength: teaching and research in the fields of society and health. The Faculty of Social Sciences is now seeking a University Lecturer to teach and instruct students within the faculty's Bachelor's Degree programme, "Socially Sustainable Societies” (SOS), which commenced in autumn 2024. The BA programme admits up to 30 students annually with a right to pursue their master’s within The Faculty of Social Sciences. 

The Socially Sustainable Societies programme is dedicated to addressing the pressing imperative of constructing socially sustainable societies. This transdisciplinary bachelor’s programme explores the historical foundations and significance of social policy and public health, incorporating a global perspective while recognizing the increasingly critical role of the environment as a prerequisite for social sustainability.   The students will develop the analytical skills necessary to critically assess and compare diverse social and health policy approaches. They will acquire expertise in strategies to mitigate social and health inequalities, master methodologies for assessing social and health impacts, and engage with intersectoral policy frameworks. Upon graduation, students will possess a strong theoretical and methodological foundation, equipping them to contribute as professionals in the design and implementation of socially sustainable societies. 

The programme is delivered entirely in English, fostering synergy between the faculty’s well-established and distinguished units in social and health sciences. The University Lecturer will play a pivotal role in shaping the programme and developing its curricula in close collaboration with the lead university lecturer and the programme’s advisory board. 

Job description  

Working under the supervision of the Vice-Dean for Education in the Faculty, the University Lecturer will have the following responsibilities:  

  • Delivering core courses within the programme 
  • Providing student guidance and supervising thesis work  
  • Taking part in curriculum development and contributing to the management of the degree programme with and in relation to other degree programmes  
  • Participating in planning an international Master’s degree programme 
  • Leading, conducting, and facilitating scientific research   
  • Actively participating in research groups and seminars 
  • Actively participating in interactions with society and fostering international collaborations within the field

Requirements 

We seek a candidate who fulfills the following requirements:  

  • Relevant doctoral degree 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality teaching and guidance in English 
  • A proven track record of pertinent research publications 
  • Demonstrated collaborative and interpersonal skills 
  • Proficiency in English communication

The following are considered advantages:    

  • Evidence of involvement in international research   
  • Experience in leading or participating in research projects 
  • Teaching, curriculum development or management experience in international or English-language degree programmes within the fields of social and health sciences 
  • Pedagogical studies and other pedagogical achievements, such as teaching development assignments or pedagogical publications 
  • Scientific research in focus areas of Socially Sustainable Societies degree programme  
  • Proficiency in the Finnish language

We offer  

Over 4-year fixed term position from 1 August 2025 until 31 Dec 2029.  A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.   

Salaries at Tampere University are based on the Finnish University Salary System for teaching and research staff. The position of University Lecturer is initially placed at level 6 in the salary system and a typical starting salary for the position is 4,300-4,600 € per month depending on previous experience.
