The Electrical Engineering unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) in the Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the field of satellite-based positioning and integration with GIS data. 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION  

The Doctoral Research will participate in the activities related to wireless satellite positioning in a transnational research project and will enroll as a PhD student at Tampere University in the Electrical Engineering Unit of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The research work will focus on enhancing GNSS localization under interference scenarios using 3D Geographical Information Systems (GIS) data; possible methods include, but are not limited to: Bayesian estimation and data fusion, AI and machine learning techniques, collaborative positioning methods for threat localization, etc.. The researcher will participate in all the PhD-related activities (attending lectures and writing publications) required for a PhD thesis and will also participate in writing deliverables (about once/year), in regular project meetings with the steering committee and in various project-related workshops. Publications are very important during the project duration. The researcher will be provided with supervision in a team with deep expertise on satellite-based wireless positioning.
  

REQUIREMENTS 

  • To be eligible to apply for the Doctoral Researcher position, you must have completed a MSc degree in a relevant area of engineering at the time of the application (examples of relevant engineering fields are: digital signal processing, electrical engineering, GNSS, wireless communications, etc.). 

  • The applicant must have strong skills in Matlab and Python -based programming and must be willing to expand their skills with Matlab oriented-programming toolboxes and Python Machine Learning toolboxes 

  • Prior basic knowledge about GNSS is a must; additional knowledge about GIS, wireless communications, digital signal processing, and machine learning is highly desirable 

  • Additional skills that are highly appreciated in this position are the willingness to work hard and to learn more about the fascinating research field of satellite positioning, ability to work both independently and in a team and interest in a research career 

  • If you have not completed a degree in Finland, an official English certificate is also required. Accepted English certificates and their minimum requirements are available here (Language skill requirements).

If the candidate can start before end of September 2025, the contract is to be offered for 2 years. For later start dates, the end time is at the end of September 2027. A typical PhD duration in Finland is 3-4 years and a PhD is typically funded by various projects in the group. Starting time is desired to be in August 2025, but it can be discussed. The work will be in-person from Tampere University Hervanta premises. Remote work from another country is not accepted. 

Salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed at level 2-4 of the job requirements scale, with a starting salary of approximately 2700€ - 2900€ per month. The salary increases based on experience and the progress of doctoral studies.

  • Cover letter. A letter of motivation and description of your research interests. What is your motivation in pursuing a research career, what are two important research questions in the field of GNSS integration with GIS data, and what methods could be used to address them with your current expertise and background (max. 4 pages). The selected applicant will have to apply and be admitted to the doctoral programme prior to the start of the work. The student needs to write a more detailed research plan at that stage.

  • Curriculum vitae according to the TENK template (max. 2 pages). 

  • Diplomas and supplements. PDF copies of your Master’s and Bachelor’s degree certificates, including transcripts of all university records in original language. If original language is other than Finnish or English, please provide an official translation in one of those languages. A certificate of language proficiency (if you completed your degree outside Finland). A language certificate will be necessary to be enrolled in the doctoral programme. 

  • Exemptions to the language requirements: It is possible to be exempted from submitting a language test score if you have completed a higher education degree in English in certain countries. If you apply without a valid language test result, carefully examine the exemptions that your studies fulfil the requirements.”

  • Reference letters (optional). Attaching 1-2 reference letters from your former supervisors is appreciated, but not mandatory; alternatively, you can mention 1-2 names of potential referees that could be contacted to give an informal recommendation via email.
