The position is placed in the Computing Sciences Unit at Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University. The Unit currently employs 45 professors and 55 full-time teachers. Our 440 staff members work mainly on our Hervanta Campus but we have operations in Tampere city center and at the university consortiums of Pori and Seinäjoki. The unit of Computing Sciences covers all essential areas of Information Technology. We develop methods, theories, and technologies for digitalized data and the information centric society. Strong mathematical, algorithmic, and computational thinking and understanding of social networks and human-computer interaction are common to all our fields. Software engineering, signal processing, computer engineering and information security are solution-oriented disciplines, and data science seeks to build models and extract meaningful information from large amounts of complex data. Machine learning, artificial intelligence and data-drivenness cut across all our disciplines.
The selected applicant will join the software engineering research group that currently has three full professors, two tenure track professors and 14 permanent teachers. We teach software engineering and software development to both students majoring in Software in our three degree programmes and throughout Tampere University for students with a Software minor. Due to this, the number of students on our courses is large, 100-1000 students per course.
Job description
Your primary role is to participate in the execution of the curriculum in collaboration within the unit. You are expected to plan, prepare and organize teaching, supervise BSc and MSc theses and act as a tutor for the students. You will work in a multidisciplinary and international environment where the interest in developing teaching methods is highly appreciated. We are invested in improving students’ learning outcomes throughout their entire study path. We have modern teaching and research facilities, and we encourage employees to actively seek professional growth, for example, by attending university pedagogy studies available at the university.
We highly value the industry relevance of our curriculum and want to actively update the content to meet the challenges changing needs. For example, generative AI seems to change the ways software is develop may be in radical change in near future. We don’t believe that software engineering will become less important, but the practices and required skills may change. Thus, we hope that the selected candidate are active in defining and implementing required changes.
Although the position is teaching oriented, participation in research is also expected. We especially welcome applicants who can complement our current teaching and research profile. Your background is taken into consideration in the assignment of the specific teaching areas.
Requirements
We are seeking highly motivated applicants for teaching in the field of software engineering with specific emphasis on DevOps and web software development. Other suitable fields of expertise can include for example cloud-native architectures, cloud infrastructures, DevOps including MLOps and AIOps, front-end technologies or edge computing. Broad expertise is appreciated.
For the university instructor position we require:
- Applicable master's degree
- Good teaching skills
- Strong English language skills
- Strong competence in web development and cloud technologies
We appreciate:
- Interest in teaching and students’ learning outcomes
- Interest for continuous curriculum and pedagogical enhancement
- Studies in university pedagogy or equivalent skills
- Understanding of software industry needs and continuous tracking of the trends in the field
- Supervision experience (tutoring, thesis, students in general)
- Ability to collaborate with teaching and research personnel and industry
- Ability to teach in Finnish is considered a strength
We offer
The position will be filled on a permanent basis and the start date will be in August 2025 or as agreed. A six (6) month trial period applies to all new employees.
The salary will be based on Finnish University Salary System which applies to teaching and research staff. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a University Instructor is placed on levels 5-6 of the job requirements scale. Typical starting salary can be for example 3800-4100 EUR / month but higher salary can be agreed based on the competence and experience of selected candidate.
