Workshop Master, It Environment



We are now seeking for a Workshop Master working on our IT environment at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. This is a permanent employment with a start date on 1.4. or by agreement.
Your Role and Goals
You will be working for the technical service for education and research at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The service is organized in thematic teams. You are responsible for the local level administration of diverse workstations in Aalto IT environment including both Windows and Mac computers. Most workstations are in central IT management but there are also some locally administered standalone systems.
The software and tools used vary from 3D modelling and VR systems to colour managed scanner systems. Depending on your competencies and departments’ needs your task may also include taking part in organising teaching on some of these skills. Your role as a Workshop Master includes the following main tasks and responsibilities.
Maintenance and development
Ensuring functioning of diverse workstations as a learning and research environment.

Administration of workstations, software licenses and data storage

Ensuring proper information security and data protection practices

Taking part in procurement of software and applications, computers, peripherals and accessories, including planning and budgeting as well as security and data protection assessments and other related procedures.

Active foresight and understanding the ongoing changes and developments in the field.
Guiding, instructing and supporting users

Finding solutions for special IT related needs of teaching and research in accordance with university policies.

Providing users with guidance and support to the use of the workstations and software in Aalto IT environment.

Supporting students and staff in good and safe IT practices with instructions and individual support.

Communicating school specific needs to Aalto IT

Communicating Aalto IT policies and offering towards the school.
Managing health and safety

Guiding users into safe working practices including cyber security, privacy and data protection.

Ensuring that Aalto policies and applicable rules are followed (e.g., cyber security, license policies)

Ensuring ergonomic workspaces and user guidance on ergonomics
Your network and team
As a workshop master, you will work as part of the Arts infra unit, which is responsible for technical services related to teaching, research and artistic activities. Arts infra workshops are multifaceted learning-by-doing environments where students learn about materials, techniques and processes and develop their powers of artistic expression. While your work is typically performed independently, you have your professional team available as a support. You will be part of manufacturing team which works with digital assets on areas of 3D printing, NC machining and mechatronics among others. Your colleagues in ARTS infra work in a variety of specialist fields, from metalworking to glassblowing and fine art printing so you will also have opportunities to develop your own competencies. You will be working closely with the university level IT services as well as other service units such as Aalto Studios. Your experience and ambitions
Success in the position requires a degree from a university of applied science or at the bachelor’s level from a higher education institution. Work experience in similar duties is valued. In your work, you will need both good IT administration and people skills. We also value initiative and problem-solving skills. Prior experience in instructing students is considered a plus. You will need fluency in spoken and written English, while Finnish skills are a plus.
