FAST-Lab at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is led by Prof. Jose L. Martinez Lastra and is part of the Unit of Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering. The objective of FAST-Lab is the seamless knowledge integration of humans and machines/robots creating smart environments by capitalising the advances on Information and Communication Technologies. FAST-Lab produces research in Automation, Industrial Informatics, Industrial Cyberphysical Systems, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

Job description

To strengthen our group, we are looking at FAST-Lab for a Doctoral Researcher to work within European research project, Agile Manufacturing as a Service through AI Autonomous Agents, MaaSAI and to carry out his/her duties as Doctoral Student.

The goal of the project is the creation of the MaaSAI System, a comprehensive digital system to automate and facilitate interactions between suppliers of manufacturing systems (Providers) and manufacturing companies (Consumers) in a Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) ecosystem, in an agile, efficient and transparent manner. The MaaSAI System aims to revolutionise manufacturing and remanufacturing processes by facilitating access to flexible and decentralised capacities, through the MaaS business model, that extends the principles of the service-oriented economy to the manufacturing industry. The project work involves the development of a dynamic cataloguing system for describing and discovering the MaaS systems (i.e., service providers and consumers). This is to facilitate optimal provider selection, multi-criteria decision-making and forecasting based on supplier and customer dynamics. The work also extends to the development of a workspace configuration system to support the optimal selection and allocation of resources (i.e., tools, equipment and other resources) for providing manufacturing services, particularly in situations where there are multiple needs and parallel service bookings for the manufacturing services.

Key duties

Research and Development:

Conduct systematic experimental research aligned with the objectives of the collaborative European project. Develop innovative methodologies and systems for dynamic cataloging, provider selection, forecasting within production equipment networks and optimal allocation of manufacturing resources.

Collaboration and Communication:

Actively participate in project meetings and collaborative activities with academic and industrial partners across Europe. Maintain regular communication with project partners to ensure alignment of research progress with project goals.

Travel and Representation:

Travel within Europe for project meetings, conferences, and collaborative work with partner institutions or companies. Represent the research team and project at scientific and industrial events, workshops, and conferences.

Reporting and Documentation:

Prepare detailed technical reports and updates for the central funding organization, adhering to specified deadlines and formats. Document research findings in high-quality scientific papers and disseminate results through presentations to both academic and general audiences.

Public Engagement:

Contribute to public dissemination efforts by presenting research outcomes in accessible formats to non-specialist audiences and stakeholders.

Teamwork and Mentorship:

Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary and international team environment. Provide support to team members and potentially mentor junior researchers or interns involved in the project.

Requirements

To be eligible for the Doctoral Researcher position, the candidate must have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in AI, Automation, Production Engineering, or other relevant field completed before the start of the employment with a minimum GPA of 4 (or equivalent). Prior experience in at least two of the following areas is desired: Industrial Informatics, Data Integration and Interoperability, Knowledge Representation and Ontologies, Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics, Decision Support Systems . The candidate must be highly motivated and enthusiastic to learn and specialize on industrial-driven research. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to conduct systematic experimental research, effectively disseminate research results through high-quality scientific publications, and present their work to non-specialist audiences in an accessible and engaging manner. Additionally, the candidate must possess the capacity to work independently as well as within multidisciplinary teams and international environments.
