Component Expert
Technical Services is a globally recognised technical knowledge centre within Wärtsilä, with the primary mission of offering comprehensive technical support to both internal and external stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of Wärtsilä's products and solutions.
We are seeking a Component Expert to join our skilled Power Systems and Cylinder Head Expert team within Technical Services. This role focuses on cylinder head components. The preferred location is Vaasa, Finland, but we are also considering candidates based in Turku, Finland, and Trieste, Italy.
This is a permanent position. We welcome applicants at various levels of seniority, as the role can be offered as Senior Technical Support Engineer, Technical Expert, or Senior Technical Expert.
What will you be doing?
As a Technical Expert in the Power Systems and Cylinder Head Expert team, you will focus on providing high-level technical support to both external and internal customers, to improve the technical and operating performance of our products. Acting as a crucial link between R&D and the field, you will identify and initiate product improvements. You will tackle complex technical issues by performing failure analyses, leveraging your experience and expertise. Your responsibilities will also include conducting investigations and field tests at customer sites when necessary. Additionally, you will oversee the technical content in aftersales information, such as engine manuals and service bulletins.
In this exciting role, you will have the opportunity to travel both domestically and internationally for 30 – 50 days per year. When you are not traveling, you will be able to work partially remotely, in line with our hybrid work model.
The ideal candidate holds an appropriate technical background and is eager to gain knowledge of Wärtsilä 4-stroke large bore engine components within the main area of cylinder head and valve mechanisms. A proactive approach to work, technical problem-solving skills, resourcefulness, and a team player mindset will enable you to shine in this technical advisory role.
Your responsibilities for the role include, but are not limited to:
- Providing high level technical support to internal and external Marine and Power Plant customers.
- Supporting with product improvements by running root cause analysis, collecting, analysing and sharing field experiences of assigned 4-stroke engine components.
- Supporting with new product releases, including participating in field follow-up investigations of new engine products.
- Coordinating and performing failure analysis of engine components
- Supporting our Supply Management function with supplier validation and development.
- Acquiring know-how from the latest developments and trends within own expertise area.
- Delivering content for manuals, aftersales information, and trainings.
- Supporting our Sales function in retrofit and upgrade activities.
The following will enable you to succeed in this role:
- BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering, equivalent educational background, or qualifications gained through work experience.
- Motivation and genuine interest to work with 4-stroke engines.
- Experience with analysis and reporting.
- Strong practical problem-solving skills and a solution-oriented mindset.
- Ambition to learn, develop, and adapt to new technologies.
- Structured, analytical, and proactive way of working.
- Flexible attitude, resourcefulness, and ability to work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with a service-oriented approach.
- Proficient English language skills, both written and spoken.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel 30 - 50 days per year.
The following will be considered an advantage:
- Experience with diesel or gas engine component troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs.
- Knowledge of design and manufacturing processes of cylinder head components, including principles of material selection and casting technology.
- Basic understanding of destructive and non-destructive testing methods.
