Machine Listening Group at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences is looking for a Doctoral Researcher. The group is working on computational methods for the analysis and processing of soundscapes, using deep learning for sound event classification and detection, sound localization, and audio captioning. The group is actively involved in DCASE Challenge for pushing forward the development of cutting-edge methods for analysis of environmental audio. 

Job description 

The research topic for the position to be filled is Continual Learning for Audio, with a focus on classification and detection of everyday sounds and acoustic scenes. Continual learning aims to allow machine learning models to continuously learn new tasks or data sequentially, accumulating knowledge without forgetting the previously learned information. This can be applied to various audio classification tasks, for example sound event or acoustic scene classification, sound event detection, sound event detection and localization. 

The candidate is expected to conduct research on the topic, write and present scientific publications in international conferences and journals, and pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University. Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in four years. More information on the admission process and eligibility requirements is available here

Requirements

  • MSc degree in related subjects, e.g. signal processing, machine learning or mathematics 
  • Excellent academic track record
  • Experience with Python and Pytorch
  • Proficient in oral and written English

Audio signal processing experience or projects is considered an advantage.

The Machine Listening Group is part of the Signal Processing Research Centre at Tampere University, a highly international academic environment that offers a nurturing and empowering atmosphere for professional and personal growth. 

The doctoral researcher position will be filled from December 2024 or as mutually agreed. The position is filled for a fixed-term period until 30 April 2027 (with a possibility for extension). A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2–4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2600 EUR/month.

Tämä sisältää tutkimusaiheita kuten akustisen maiseman ja äänitapahtumien luokittelu, äänitapahtumien tunnistus, sekä manuaalinen ja automaattinen äänen nimeäminen.
