Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

About the position

We are now looking for a DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in “application of machine learning for model development in hydrogen reactive flows“. We are also open to receive applications by those who have not finished their Master’s thesis yet. You may start as a research assistant to finalize your Master's degree and start the doctoral research position right after that.

- Are you familiar with machine learning concepts and programming?

- Are you interested in obtaining hand-on practice in computation fluid dynamics for reactive flows?

- Are you passionate about application of machine learning in computational fluid dynamics?

If you answered YES to these questions, this position is definitely suitable for you!

The research will be carried out at Aalto University’s Energy Conversion and System research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In this position you will have a chance to make an impact on developing advanced numerical models for turbulent reactive flows of e-fuels including ammonia/hydrogen blends using machine learning techniques.

You will develop advanced numerical models using detailed CFD data such as direct numerical simulations (DNS). Also, you will gain experience in conducting high-fidelity numerical simulations and analyzing your data using machine learning techniques. You will have the opportunity of research visits to the best research groups of the field around the world as well as meeting highly-talented researchers of the field through international seminars and conferences.

Your research will be part of a research project in which your work will consist of computational studies to find proper numerical models for turbulent reactive flows. In this work, you will be able to interact with other computational researchers in our group working on various other applications (e.g. combustion in burners/engines, numerical modeling, programming, etc). As part of your doctoral candidate duties, you will also gain experience in teaching and instructing other students.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for a passionate person that would have the following skills:

Essential

  • Master’s degree in physics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science or a closely related field. If you don’t have your Master’s degree yet, you may also start a research assistant
  • Strong interest in fluids physics, modeling, and numerical simulation
  • Experience in programming e.g.in Python or C++ and ability to work in Linux environment
  • Academic background in machine learning techniques
  • Basic knowledge in computational fluid dynamics
  • Demonstrated academic excellence in previous studies

Beneficial

  • Experience with using/programming in OpenFOAM
  • Knowledge on advanced data analysis tools

What we offer

The salary of a starting Doctoral researcher is currently 2720 € / month (gross), increasing as milestones for the PhD are achieved (highest PhD researcher level is currently 3403 €/month). The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours. The employment contract includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The employment relationship is full-time, fixed-term employment at Aalto University. The first contract will be made for 2 years, with a possibility of extension, based on your performance, after passing the midterm review.
