Lecturer in Digital Design

Your role and goals

Digital design and manufacturing tools and processes have become a key interest in many branches of design including installation, surface, product, textile, and spatial design, as well as in experimental design. All these are in the focus of Department of Design education.

In the lecturer role you contribute mainly to Department of Design’s MA programme Collaborative and Industrial Design, and BA majors in Design and the new English-speaking Aalto BA programme in Design starting in 2019. Depending of your profile, you collaborate with the Department of Design’s research teams, Embodied Design Group in particular. You will utilize Aalto University facilities and develop collaboration with other schools of Aalto University.

Your duties include teaching non-parametric and parametric CAD tools and processes, generative design, digital design projects to bachelor and master level students, coordinating projects, and participating in the development of teaching, research and artistic activities at the Department of Design. You will participate in the guidance and assessment of student assignments and thesis works and take part in student selections when needed.

Your experience

Successful conduct of the duties requires strong know-how of the processes of digital design including non-parametric and parametric CAD. Interest and curiosity towards emerging fields like robotics, mixed reality, computational co-creativity, and/or digitally controlled manufacturing processes are necessary to lead the field forward at the Department. Diverse experience in design and knowledge of digital design technologies, project management and teamwork skills are essential for the position. The applicant is also required to have a vision for the future of the field of the lectureship and ability to work in a flexible and open-minded fashion in the multi-disciplinary fields of design.

The lecturer is required to have at least a higher university degree, i.e. master level, and artistic-professional competence, practical experience of working in the field of the lectureship and good teaching experience and skills. Research and technical merits, as well as other significant merits in the field of lectureship and pedagogic education are regarded an advantage. The lecturer shall have knowledge of the international field of digital design. You need to be fluent in English. Finnish and/or Swedish language skills are regarded an advantage.

The staff at the Department of Design consists of leading academics and practitioners who have active research or professional careers. You will be working in a team with professors and lecturers in Digital Design, plus hourly-paid teachers, administrative staff and other teaching and research staff of the department.
