The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 35,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki. The University of Helsinki is an equal employer.

Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Out of them, some 1,000 are postgraduates. There are some 500 international students, and over 200 researchers and teachers from abroad.

Institute for Atmospheric and Earth system Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology and forest sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. The scientific objective of INAR is to reduce the scientific uncertainties related to climate change at global scale by quantifying the essential feedback mechanisms between atmospheric processes and changing functioning of biosphere and to increase knowledge of air quality – climate interactions and feedback. Research and high international impact of INAR is based on the unique, comprehensive and continuous data from SMEAR field stations. INAR leads two European ESFRI research infrastructures. There are around 20 professors and 150 researchers in different career stages affiliated with INAR in the University of Helsinki. INAR has national partners in Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University of Technology.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for two positions:

A DOCTORAL STUDENT AND A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

starting from 1 January 2020 or according to a contract. The Doctoral student position is for four years and Postdoctoral position for 18 months.

The Doctoral student will work on the project, which will focus on phloem physiological response to drought in tree species. There will be also collaborations with other parts of the project, including ecosystem ecology and community ecology. A fair part of the work will be carried out in greenhouse conditions in Helsinki, but fieldwork is also planned as well as international collaborations. Work will take place at the Institute for atmospheric and earth system research (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/inar-institute-for-atmospheric-and-earth-syst...) a new and leading institute the University of Helsinki. The student will be affiliated with the group of ecosystem processes (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/ecosystem-processes) and micrometerology (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/micrometeorology).

The candidate will need to enrol in one of the PhD program at the university of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/the-application-p...).

In addition to the University requirements to enrolling a PhD program, the project requires following:
- Ability to work both independently, and in a team are important.
- Rigor and precision are central to the experimental work planned.
- Previous experience with ecophysiological methods is an asset (to name a few, gas exchange, point-dendrometer, sap flow, hydraulic, stable isotopes, non-structural carbohydrate analyses).
- Experience or willingness to learn analytical tool (R is the preferred language but equivalent languages are also fine).
- willingness to work in the field and abroad for extended periods of time (several weeks to a couple of months) during scheduled field campaigns.
- Experience with writing and publishing peer-reviewed paper(s) is very beneficial, given the requirement for a successful PhD at the University of Helsinki.

Working language is English. The starting salary of the doctoral student will be ca. 2200–2300 euros/month. Salaried position in Finland automatically include payment to pension, unemployment funds, occupational healthcare and a generous holiday allowance.

The Postdoctoral researcher will work on the project, which will focus on the ecophysiology of phloem transport, in particular the coupling between carbon and water transport. There will be also collaborations with other parts of the project, in particular with the PhD student (see above). A fair part of the work will be carried in greenhouse conditions in Helsinki, but fieldwork is also planned as well as international collaborations. The position also offer the opportunities to apply for further own funding or be involved in graduate student supervision.

Candidates should have a PhD in ecophysiology or related topic, good experimental and analytical skills. The project requires:
- Ability to work independently, but also in a team.
- Rigour and precision are central to the experimental work planned.
- Previous experience with at least some ecophysiological methods is necessary (of particular interest are stable isotopes, point-dendrometer, hydraulic).
- Experience with analytical tool (R is the preferred language but equivalent language are also fine)
- willingness to work in the field and abroad for extended periods of time (several weeks to a couple of months) during scheduled field campaigns.
- Experience with writing and publishing peer-reviewed papers is necessary.

Working language is English. The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3300–3700 euros/month. Salaried position in Finland automatically included payment to pension and unemployment funds and healthcare and a generous holiday allowance.

Applications must have the following enclosures as a joint pdf document (in English):
1) an academic portfolio approved by the Faculty (as set out at https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-science/faculty/join-us/academic-p...)
2) recommendation letters (at least one for PhD student and at least two for postdoc)
3) a list of those publications (or a full publication list) and other relevant documents on competence and merits that the applicant wishes to be taken into account in the selection process.

Please submit your application using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via the link Apply for job. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via the SAP HR portal.

The deadline for applications is 22 November 2019.
